Cheat the Prophet [May. 24th, 2010|09:09 am]
"The human race, to which so many of my readers belong, has been playing at children's games from the beginning, and will probably do it till the end, which is a nuisance for the few people who grow up. And one of the games to which it is most attached is called "Keep to-morrow dark," and which is also named (by the rustics in Shropshire, I have no doubt) "Cheat the Prophet." The players listen very carefully and respectfully to all that the clever men have to say about what is to happen in the next generation. The players then wait until all the clever men are dead, and bury them nicely. They then go and do something else. That is all. For a race of simple tastes, however, it is great fun."

L'schnooky yesh meeshmeesh [Jan. 21st, 2009|10:07 am]
[Tags|, , ]
[Current Location |Kfar Vradim, Israel]
[music |Hebrew news]

I just discovered that my aunt's house has wireless. The trip so far has consisted of day trips followed by long stretches of hanging out on the couch, watching the news with family and Schnooky the cat. It's terrific. I don't usually feel like I need a vacation, but having taken one anyway, I gotta admit that they are rejuvenating.

Hebrew lesson of the day:

"Meeshmeesh" = apricot
"Reetchretch" = zipper
"L'meeshmeesh yesh reetchretch" = The apricot has a zipper.

English really needs more loan words from Hebrew.

How's things in the states? Have all those things that needed change gotten change yet? If y'all could utopify America before I get back, that'd be great, thanks.

Now we're going to the hot springs.

Fairytales for Adults [Dec. 24th, 2008|12:21 pm]

[music |(Mark Knopfler) Hill Farmer's Blues]

I saw Slumdog Millionaire last night, and while I enjoyed it a lot more than Pan's Labyrinth, I think there's a built-in limit to how much I can enjoy any movie that's labelled "a fairytale for adults". And I think I figured the common elements that disengage me from these films despite my intention to like them.

Mavericks all over the world are getting screwed over by The Man*:

BANGKOK (Reuters) - A maverick Thai general who has threatened to bomb anti-government protesters and drop snakes on them from helicopters has been reassigned as an aerobics teacher, the Bangkok Post said on Friday.

* or, in the US, The People.

Bug [Nov. 18th, 2008|12:59 pm]

Well, it seems like the zzzzzerver move went well. My journal seemzzzzzz to have teleported to Montana with everything intact. They packed the serverzzzzz into the chamber pretty tight, but still a fly managed to sneak in, and bolted out azzzzz soon as the Montana team opened the door.

But is it just me, or does the LJ logo look a little darker and bristlier than it usually doezzz? Also, some weird graphical glitch has added compound eyezzz to my userpic. Huh.

Votey vote [Nov. 4th, 2008|03:40 pm]
[Current Location |King St.]
[music |(Broken Social Scene) Late Nineties Bedroom Rock For The Missionaries]

Feeling pretty good about casting my vote analog-style at Malcolm X Elementary School, on a sunny day following two stormy ones, safe in the knowledge that the benevolent spirit of Debra Bowen is guarding the sanctity of all the little broken arrows that I made whole. All told, it was 10 minutes in a subdued atmosphere. No screaming, no Berkeley wackiness, nothing but smiles.

I didn't get any pie but I might try for some ice cream later.

I don't know for sure whether the real Large Hadron Collider is operated by a giant Frankenstein-style knife switch, but really, what else would they use? I tried finding a real knife switch, but the one I ordered online looked way bigger in the picture than it actually was. It's the perfect size for a gerbil mad scientist who wants to bring a Frankenrodent to life in dramatic fashion, but it looks puny in the hands of people. So, cardboard and duct tape around a coat hanger frame. And the handle from a broken cheese slicer. Making stuff like this is so much fun -- I need to start keeping more raw materials around the house so that future forays into making don't turn out quite so ghetto.

Rally [Oct. 25th, 2008|08:40 am]
[Tags|, ]
[Current Location |39.545410, -119.795807]

I'm at an obama rally in Reno. At a stadium on the UNR campus. There should be vendors walking through the bleachers selling lattes, sushi and chardonnay--you know, the sustenance of Fake America--but there aren't. The man himself comes out in an hour and a half. Good way to kick off a canvassing weekend.

Here's a thing that made me laugh more than it made me wince, and it made me wince a lot: John McCain. Youth You Can Believe In.

"Steve, April Fool's Day is seven months off. You want me to say Obama is too old to be president and I'm not?"

"I'm younger than Obama?"

"Not younger, exactly. More youthful. You have more, um, youthiness. What is 72? That's just a numeral. Same two digits as 27. It's ink on a driver's license. You have the adventurous spirit of youth. You're the innovator, the reformer. You may be older in years. You're older technically. But you're younger in qualifications. That's the age that really matters. Qualificationswise, you're entering your prime, and you have the experience to prove it. You're like Reagan, although you're even younger, though not technically.
